OUR FACTS
In 44 years, the Notting Hill Carnival has grown from a gathering of 500 people and one band to becoming one of the biggest annual street carnivals in Europe, in addition to being the largest symbol of multi-cultural unity in the same region.
This iconic event generates approximately £100 million for London's economy annually and no other event in the UK comes close to matching the audience that attends the carnival.
Taking place over the August bank holiday weekend (24th -25th August 2008), Notting Hill will be host to one of the biggest street parties in the world. An estimated attendance of 2.5million visitors in 2008 with an audience as varied as it is extensive has been predicted. 90% of the attending audiences are based within the UK, with an estimated 140,000 coming from the rest of Europe.
Carnival's growing diversity continues to appeal to the masses, attracting visitors from both black and white backgrounds in almost equal numbers.
In addition, website activity is expected to attract between 7-9 million hits throughout the month of August.
Notting Hill Carnival continues to be testament to the cultural diversity of the UK and the generous spirit of the Caribbean roots from which Carnival originates.
