MAS ASSOCIATION NAME CHANGE - GLIMA Following a number of essential changes to the management and operation of the London International Mas Association (LICMA), the reviewed organisation is renamed GLIMA - the Greater London International Mas Association. The name change, which secured the overwhelming approval of the general membership at its recent general meeting, was formally launched at the London Notting Hill Carnival with Mas Band members’ floats depicting the GLIMA logo on their banners and flags produced within a joint purchasing arrangement. The name change to GLIMA is part of a transformation process being pursued by the new Management Committee supported by the general membership that includes a new Vision - "Uniting Communities through Mas and Carnival Culture" and Mission Statement encompassing the following key elements: Developing and promoting the art of Carnival Mas making it accessible to all communities. Improving the quality of arrangements to deliver carnival by sharing expertise and encouraging collaboration amongst Mas bands. Educating young people in the history, art and cultural aspects of carnival through the promotion of audio, visual and graphic arts and design. Providing a platform for expression, opening doors to a new generation of carnival culture. A Management Committee spokesperson stated: "GLIMA embodies the local, regional and global nature of our Mas Association and the decision is indicative of the level of commitment expressed by the members to drive its new Vision and Mission Statement to manage more professionally in the future". GLIMA will continue to facilitate the participation of its member in the London Carnival as well as enable their presence in other UK cities, Europe, and other countries. "Each band has a different theme, this year ours takes into account the bi-centenary of the abolition of slavery. Our designs reflect this theme. They look at 'confinement versus freedom' using abstract shapes and colours."
